DA&FW frames national programmes for crops, inputs and farm incomes with the States, which administer agriculture on the ground. Its newest umbrella programme, the PM Dhan-Dhaanya Krishi Yojana, was approved in July 2025 for 100 low-productivity districts and converges 36 schemes of 11 departments.

Runs PM-KISAN income support (₹6,000 a year in three instalments, since February 2019), the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana crop insurance scheme, and the interest subvention on Kisan Credit Card loans.

Through DARE, oversees ICAR — founded on 16 July 1929 — and its national system of institutes, agricultural universities and Krishi Vigyan Kendras. ICAR released 339 crop varieties in 2025-26.

Publishes three advance estimates and a final estimate of crop production each agricultural year (July–June). The Third Advance Estimates for 2025-26 put foodgrain output at a record 376.563 million tonnes.

Minimum Support Prices are approved by the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs on the recommendation of the Commission for Agricultural Costs and Prices, which is attached to DA&FW. Cereal procurement is carried out by the Food Corporation of India and State agencies under the Department of Food and Public Distribution; DA&FW runs price support for pulses and oilseeds.

The Digital Agriculture Mission (approved 2 September 2024, ₹2,817 crore) is building farmer registries and a digital crop survey; more than 10.28 crore Farmer IDs were generated by 30 July 2026. Other programmes support farm machinery and drones for women's self-help groups.

DA&FW runs the Per Drop More Crop component of the Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchayee Yojana, which supports drip and sprinkler irrigation. Major and medium irrigation projects fall under the Ministry of Jal Shakti.

ICAR's National Innovations in Climate Resilient Agriculture (NICRA) programme develops and demonstrates climate-resilient technologies and varieties; the Ministry promotes natural farming through a national mission approved on 25 November 2024.

The National Agriculture Market (e-NAM) linked 1,656 mandis in 23 States and 4 Union Territories by 30 June 2026. A central scheme has formed 10,000 Farmer Producer Organisations since 2020-21.

Krishi Vigyan Kendras carry extension to farmers: over three years they held 9.67 lakh frontline demonstrations and trained 62.35 lakh farmers. The Ministry also supports allied activity such as horticulture and bamboo.
